Merzouga is a small Moroccan village near the Algerian border in the Sahara Desert. It’s renowned as the entrance to Erg Chebbi, a vast swath of sand dunes north of town. Camel treks and desert camping are most popular in the Merzouga desert in Morocco.
Along the way, you’ll be able to see the high Atlas Mountains, their beautiful sceneries, and Berber settlements. You will visit Ait Ben Haddou’s old kasbah. Visit the Cinema Studios and the Rose Town, as well as the Dades Valley, Todra Valley, and the Gorges. You will also have the option to ride camels, sleep in a tent similar to those used by nomads and enjoy the calm and tranquillity of Merzouga’s breathtaking Sahara Desert. For the record, bear in mind that on the last day of 3 days Marrakech to Merzouga desert, it’s going to be at least a 10 hours’ drive from Merzouga to Marrakech.
We will pick you up from your riad/hotel and begin our 3-day tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert and back by passing via the high Atlas Mountains via Tizi-n-Tichka pass (2260 m) (7414 ft), which is North Africa’s highest major mountain pass. You will be able to appreciate nature’s gorgeous vistas as well as the unique Berber communities. We continue south after traversing the mountains to reach Morocco’s most famous, filmed, and photographed Kasbah. The Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou is a Unesco World Heritage Site that has used as the setting for a number of films, including Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Game of Thrones. After that, we’ll head to Ouarzazate, where you’ll see the Oscar Film Studios, which are world-famous. We continue on our journey down the Thousand Kasbahs Road to Rose Town, where people harvest over 400 tonnes of rose petals to be processed into lotions, rose water, and perfumes. In May, the town has a festival. After that, we drive along the Dades valley where you will spend the night in a hotel overlooking the Valley.
After breakfast, we will enjoy the spectacular mud houses and the amazing rock formation known locally as ” monkies fingers ” then take the road to the Sahara Desert via Todra Gorges: a narrow corridor that rises dramatically up to 300m on both sides. We then drive around 15 km to Todra valley where we will stop for a panoramic view of the impressive greenery and mud villages that surround the area. Continuing to Merzouga desert, we will pass by villages like Tinjdad, Malaab, Toroug… Our 3 days tour from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert will allow us to see the hidden old underground irrigation system – a long chain of dried wells that used to be active hundreds of years ago. We arrive at Merzouga in the late afternoon where you will ride camels and cross the golden dunes, on the way, your camel guide will stop for you to see a magnificent sunset, then continue riding to a Bedouin camp. After a delicious dinner, you will enjoy Berber music played by local nomads around the fire and under a starry sky.
Getting up early is a “must do” if you want to watch the most beautiful sunrise of your life on top of a dune near the camp. After breakfast, you ride camel back or 4×4 to meet your driver. Then go on the road and head for Marrakech, leaving the desert solitude behind. We’ll take a different route, traveling through villages like Alnif, Nkoub, and Agdez, where you’ll view Morocco’s longest river and the gorgeous Draa Valley, and have lunch in the village. We’ll pass the Anti-Atlas Mountains on our way back to Ouarzazate. Then, after crossing the High Atlas Mountains, arrive in Marrakech in the evening, when the 3-day travel from Marrakech to the Sahara Desert ends.
