Morocco Itinerary 7 Days – Day by Day Route

Day 1Arrive in Marrakech

Your Morocco travel itinerary begins in Marrakech, the city that most travelers use as their starting point. After arriving and checking into your riad in the medina, spend the afternoon exploring Djemaa el-Fna, the main square that comes alive with storytellers, musicians, and food stalls as evening approaches. Walk through the surrounding souks and browse the stalls selling spices, leather, carpets, and ceramics. Dinner on the square or in one of the nearby restaurants is the ideal introduction to Moroccan food.

Day 2Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley

Leave Marrakech early and drive south over the Tizi n’Tichka pass, the highest mountain road in Morocco at over 2,000 metres. The views across the Atlas Mountains are dramatic and the Berber villages along the way are worth a brief stop. Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed fortified ksar that has appeared in films such as Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones. Spend an hour walking through its narrow earthen streets and climbing to the top for views of the surrounding valley. In the afternoon drive through Ouarzazate, often called the Hollywood of Africa, before continuing to the Dades Valley for the night.

Overnight: Dades Valley or Boumalne Dades
Drive time: approximately 5 to 6 hours with stops

Day 3Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Merzouga Sahara Desert

This is one of the most scenic days on any Morocco trip itinerary. In the morning, visit the Todra Gorge, where sheer rock walls rise 300 metres on either side of a narrow canyon. Walk through the gorge and watch local climbers on the walls before continuing east toward Merzouga and the famous Erg Chebbi dunes of the Sahara Desert. Arrive in the late afternoon in time for your camel trek into the dunes. Ride out to the camp as the sun sets over the sand, light a campfire, and enjoy a traditional Berber dinner under a sky full of stars.

Overnight: Sahara desert camp, Merzouga
Drive time: approximately 4 to 5 hours with stops

Day 4Sahara Desert – Ziz Valley – Midelt – Fes

Wake before sunrise and climb a dune to watch the light change over the Sahara, one of the most memorable moments of any Morocco travel itinerary. After breakfast at camp, ride back to the village and start the long drive north toward Fes through the Ziz Valley and its dramatic palmery, the market town of Er Rachidia, and the Middle Atlas Mountains and cedar forests around Midelt. Arrive in Fes in the evening and check into a riad inside the ancient medina.

Overnight: Fes
Drive time: approximately 6 to 7 hours with stops

Day 5Fes – Full Day in the Imperial City

Fes is Morocco’s oldest imperial city and one of the best-preserved medieval urban centers in the world. Spend a full day exploring the Fes el-Bali medina with a local guide. Key highlights include the famous Chouara tanneries where leather has been dyed in the same way for centuries, the Al-Qarawiyyin University founded in 859 AD, the ornate Bou Inania Madrasa, and the spice souk and carpenters quarter. The medina is a UNESCO World Heritage site and genuinely one of the most impressive places on any Morocco itinerary.

Overnight: Fes

Day 6Fes – Chefchaouen

Drive northwest from Fes to Chefchaouen, one of the most photographed towns in the world, famous for its blue-painted streets, staircases, and doorways tucked into the Rif Mountains. The journey takes roughly 3 hours and passes through rolling hills and small Moroccan towns. Arrive in Chefchaouen in the early afternoon and spend the rest of the day wandering the medina, visiting the central plaza, and hiking up to the Spanish mosque for panoramic views over the blue city. Chefchaouen is also known for its relaxed atmosphere, good food, and quality local handicrafts.

Overnight: Chefchaouen
Drive time: approximately 3 hours

Day 7Chefchaouen – Tangier or Casablanca – Departure

Your final day on this Morocco 7 day itinerary depends on your departure city. If flying from Tangier, the drive takes about 2 hours and gives you a short morning in Chefchaouen before leaving. If returning to Casablanca, the journey is approximately 4.5 hours and you can stop in Meknes or at the Roman ruins of Volubilis along the way. Alternatively, if your flight leaves from Fes, you can return there in about 3 hours. Whatever your route, this is a good day to pick up any last-minute souvenirs and reflect on an extraordinary week across Morocco.

Morocco Itinerary 7 Days – Practical Travel Tips

To get the most from your 7 day Morocco itinerary, keep these points in mind:

  • Book a private tour with a driver–guide if you want flexibility on stops and timing; small group tours are cheaper but less adaptable.

  • The best seasons for this itinerary are March to May and September to November when temperatures in the desert and mountains are comfortable.

  • Carry light layers as mountain nights and desert nights can be cold even in summer.

  • Book your desert camp and Fes riad in advance, especially for April and October when demand is highest.

  • This itinerary works as a one-way tour from Marrakech to Fes, which avoids retracing your route.

Morocco Itinerary 7 Days – Frequently Asked Questions

Is 7 Days Enough for a Morocco Itinerary?

A Morocco itinerary 7 days is one of the most popular choices for international travelers because it fits comfortably into a one-week vacation and covers both north and south Morocco. You will need to move most days, but the driving scenery is part of the experience and the distances are manageable with a private driver or guided tour. What is the best route for a 7 day Morocco itinerary?

The most popular 7 day Morocco itinerary route is Marrakech – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades – Sahara desert – Fes – Chefchaouen, finishing in Tangier or Casablanca. This one-way route avoids retracing your steps.

What is the best time for a 7 day Morocco travel itinerary?

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer the most comfortable temperatures across all regions, including the Sahara desert and the Atlas Mountains.

Great communication before the trip and excellent service throughout.

  • Eight of us did this tour as a group trip and Morocco Stunning Tours handled everything perfectly. The logistics of moving a large group through medinas and desert roads were managed smoothly. Our guide Mohamed was outstanding, always on time, always smiling, and full of knowledge about Moroccan history and culture. The Sahara sunrise was a moment none of us will ever forget.

  • We had done Morocco independently before but this time chose a guided 7-day itinerary and the difference was remarkable. Having a local driver who knew the best viewpoints, the right time to arrive at each place, and which restaurants to avoid made everything so much better. The Dades Valley and Todra Gorge were highlights we would have rushed through on our own.

    Isabelle Moreau
  • We came with our teenage daughter and she loved every moment of this Morocco itinerary 7 days. The mix of cities, mountains, and desert kept her engaged the whole time. Our guide was great at explaining history in a way that teenagers actually find interesting. The blue streets of Chefchaouen on the last day were her absolute favorite.

  • A group of colleagues and I did this tour as a work retreat and it was brilliant from start to finish. Morocco Stunning Tours was flexible with our requests, added a cooking class in Marrakech for us, and made sure everyone had a great time in the desert. The quality of accommodation throughout was well above what we expected for the price.

  • We spent our Christmas holiday on this 7-day Morocco itinerary and it was the best decision we made. The desert camp on a winter night was magical with a clear sky full of stars and a warm fire. The Berber dinner and music made it feel like a real cultural experience rather than a tourist show. Morocco Stunning Tours is a company that truly cares about its guests.

    Sophie and Antoine Bernard
  • We did this Morocco 1 week itinerary as a family of five including grandparents and it worked perfectly for all ages.
